The Education Sage Changes Kids’ Lives
That is what I do. I change kids’ lives in the moment, for the future and forever by showing them how their individual learning styles work. The change happens mentally and emotionally. Most kids who begin with me are broken. Their spirits are broken because school and learning has become such an overwhelming negative in their lives. I show kids the pathways to use their individual brain learning styles. I am Beth Silver, The Education Sage.
Our Society Needs Positive People
As a society, we must ensure the well-being of all kids, and we must encourage a positive attitude toward life so they can become the next generations of leaders, problem solvers, inventors for life ahead, defenders of the free will needed for life, and knowledgeable citizens.
The Journey Begins with Identifying Learning Styles
I start with a student where he/she is currently functioning. I show each student what works individually for his/her brain. Students learn differently. Each has their own learning styles. It is important that a student understand that the way he/she learns is great. Showing students the pathways to use their individual brains for learning in their individual styles is the beginning of our journey together by learning how they function mentally.
What is The Emotional Component?
Next, getting the students to relax and smile is the goal. When students are uptight, nervous, and anxious, learning is going to be difficult, and time will be wasted studying because the information is not retained. There are some subjects that students have a strong negative reaction to emotionally. Usually, it is because they have not been successful in learning the subject matter. They shy away from the subject and have missing assignments, low grades, and very poor attitudes about doing the work. I take care to celebrate every positive step forward for a student.
Work and Study Habits Must Change
Changing students’ lives starts with changing their work and study habits. Getting organized and staying that way is first. The next step is to make sure nothing gets lost in class or in the work done outside of class. I begin with a To Do List, agenda, or planner. Students need to create daily instructions for themselves to know what they must do. This includes outside classes, appointments, sports, family events, and homework. This is some of the most difficult work I do with students. Getting them to follow through with the organization is tough. It is important to stick with it – this will change their lives forever.
Reinforce the Positive Emotional Feelings
It is important to acknowledge each positive step. Saying-“Good Work”, “I am proud of what you are doing!”, “You are doing well!”, “You got it!” – is vital for students to hear. Chances are they have only heard negative comments. Those negative comments have led students to believe that they are stupid or not capable of becoming good students. It takes a long time to convince students that they are really doing well and can be successful. It is rewarding when students achieve success because they smile and sit up straight knowing they have done it, and they are not stupid!
The Change Happens Forever
Once the foundations for self-understanding and self-organization are laid down, kids thrive – regardless of the different ways their individual brains work. With patience, time, and fortitude, kids gain confidence. The confidence they gain from feeling in control of their lives, and being in control of their education, opens up the world and their futures to them.
When I say what I do changes kids’ lives forever, it is true. Here are some students’ stories. I am showing where they started with me and where they are today.
