Building reading comprehension skills starts as soon as your student begins to read. Can your student tell you in his/her own words what the sentence just read means? Can your student explain what happened? Who was involved? What does this means to him/her?
Too often when students begin to read the emphasis is on the pronunciation of the words and not the meaning of the words. Ed Sage School teaches its students to read non-fiction material by paragraph. At the end of the paragraph, the student should be able to summarize what was read in his/her own words. Sometimes if the material is dense and hard to understand, it is necessary to stop and summarize in the middle of a paragraph.
Ed Sage School has its students read with access to an app called Dictionary.com. Students search any word they cannot pronounce, and/or do not know the meaning. This increases the reading comprehension immediately and builds sight word vocabulary.
